The people who live and work here enjoy the benefits of being 90 minutes from the hustle and bustle of Chicago, 30 minutes from the beaches of Lake Michigan, and in the midst of a thriving community full of diverse business, educational, cultural and recreational opportunities.
Located in the heart of the Midwest, South Bend is the center of manufacturing, retailing, farming, professional and service businesses. In 1852, the Industrial era of South Bend began with the arrival from Ohio of Henry and Clement Studebaker, who founded the Studebaker firm, which attained international fame. Today, Tippecanoe Place, the former Studebaker Mansion, is now an elegant restaurant. The mansion has been restored with many original features for you to tour after enjoying lunch or dinner.
The Studebaker National Museum features vehicles from the Studebaker Historic Vehicle Collection, including the carriage believed to be the one Abraham Lincoln rode to the theater the night he was shot. It's an exciting exhibit of national history in our automotive industry.
1995 marked the building of the College Football Hall of Fame, located downtown South Bend. South Bend is also home to the University of Notre Dame which is not only the largest employer in the area, but the most recognized feature of the community.
