Find the Right Neighborhood
Are you shopping for a home? Then you're shopping for a neighborhood, too! Finding the right neighborhood to call home is one of the biggest keys to finding a house you'll love long-term. By understanding what to look for in a neighborhood and how to narrow your options, you'll be ready to find the neighborhood of your dreams. Our REALTORS® are here to help, with a guide to picking the right neighborhood for your next home.

Become a Neighborhood Expert: What to Look for & How to Find the Right Fit

Finding the right neighborhood is all about organizing your priorities, deciding what matters most, and being willing to compromise in order to identify the right match. It's about deciding what you want most, both now and in the future. First, you'll want to ask yourself some key questions:

  • Do I have family needs? If you currently have children or plan to do so in the future, then quality school districts, safe streets, and ample kid-friendly activities may rank high on your priority list.

  • How far am I willing to commute? Choosing how far you're willing to commute to work – and how much traffic you're willing to deal with – will help you identify the most promising locations.

  • What do I want most from my neighborhood? Whether you want to enjoy your favorite hobbies or simply take care of all your daily needs close to home, your priorities are what matter most when scouting neighborhoods. Identifying key "wants" ahead of time will help you narrow your search.

  • What don't I want in my neighborhood? Considering what you don't want is also a key step, and will help save time by allowing you to cross off any neighborhoods that don't meet your needs.

  • What is my budget for buying a house? Some neighborhoods are more affordable than others when it comes to real estate prices, and it may cost a little extra to move into a very popular neighborhood. Planning your budget ahead of time makes it much easier to find the right match.

Once you answer the big questions and have an idea what you're searching for, it's time to start learning about neighborhoods in your target communities:

  • Start Your Search Online – There are a ton of resources available online to help you learn about neighborhoods, including community websites, census data, real estate listings, and social media. Learning everything you can from those resources is the perfect way to start your search.

  • Make a List – You wouldn't want to forget a promising neighborhood, so make a list as you go of the neighborhoods you want to visit most. You can even order your list, with the most promising neighborhoods first.

  • Experience Neighborhoods First-Hand – There's no better way to learn about a neighborhood than visiting yourself, so it's a good idea to spend some time in neighborhoods that catch your eye. Experience the local attractions, scout homes, and get an idea of what life in the neighborhood is really like, both during the day and at night.

As you work to find the right neighborhood, remember that there is plenty of help available. Your real estate agent should be a major resource, and seeking feedback from trusted friends will also help you find a match.

Whether you've got the perfect neighborhood in mind or you're just starting your search, our experienced real estate team is here to help. Contact us for all of your real estate needs in Southwestern Michigan and Northern Indiana.
