Whether you're spring cleaning or you're just fed up with how your house looks, deep cleaning is a great way to freshen up your home and enjoy the clean air that comes with it. It may not be an exciting thing to do, but it's easier than you might think and the payoff is huge. Just follow our real estate agents' top 7 tips for deep cleaning your entire house.
- Make a Schedule
Approaching your home room-by-room is the best way to ensure you effectively deep clean your house at any time of the year. Scope out your home and start with areas that need extra attention or those that you skip during routine cleaning. Regardless, of which room your start with, having a plan and a checklist will keep you focused on the task at hand.
- Declutter
Decluttering makes deep cleaning easier and keeps you organized. Sorting your items into four categories- put-away, give-away, trash, or store- can be effective as you begin your cleaning process. Now is a good time to get rid of items that are weighing you down. Plan a garage sale, donate items to good causes, or just find a new place to store them.
- Work from Top to Bottom
Starting high then going low will force debris downward and keep you from having to re-clean or re-dust your space. So, tackle the hard-to-reach surfaces, including the ceiling, ceiling trim, walls, light fixtures, fans, and baseboards. If you have a vacuum with an extension hose, you can use it to get cobwebs and dust. Alternatively, you can use a clean microfiber mop with a telescoping handle. A spritz of water of all you need on the mop. Then dust your furniture and other items before vacuuming the floor.
- Don't Forget Your Windows
Because washing windows from both sides can be a tedious job, you want to get it right the first time. Start with removing dirt from the sills and tracks with a brush or vacuum it up with a dusting attachment. This will prevent dirt from becoming muddy when mixed with a cleaner. Don't hold back on the cleaner, especially if your window is extra dirty. You need plenty of it to dissolve and suspend dirt and avoid streaks.
- Wash the Walls
People almost always deep clean their floors, but they usually forget about the walls. They may not look as if they need a bath, but enough dust and soot also cling to walls to warrant a good bath. Just use a damp towel and dishwashing detergent to wipe down walls starting from the top. Dry the wall with a clean cloth.
- Replace HVAC and Furnace Filters
The furnace and HVAC are some of the often-overlooked yet important parts of deep cleaning. Air conditioner ducts build up dust over time so replacing the filters is an inexpensive way to ensure you're breathing clean, healthy air.
- Clean Carpets and Upholstery
Fabrics that have absorbed body dirt, germs and body oil will need a deep cleaning to get ready for another period of wear and that close inspection by your guests. When cleaning upholstery or shampooing carpets, test with an unobtrusive area to ensure the treatment won't discolor fabrics. Move furniture slightly and place a small wax paper under the legs to keep them from getting wet and protect your carpet.
