If you'd like to see interesting items that tell the history of the Michiana area, you won't have to leave your house to do it. The St. Joseph County Public Library has several online digital collections spotlighting Michiana that you can access online.
Our real estate agents suggest exploring the following collections to learn more about the Michiana area of northern Indiana and southwest Michigan.
- Oral Histories
The library's oral history collection preserves the stories of South Bend and St. Joseph County residents, presented in their own words. "South Bend Stories" were recorded in 2015 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of South Bend. They include stories from longtime WSBT radio personality Jon Thompson, who shares his account of surviving and reporting on the blizzard of 1978. "Michiana Voices" includes memories from Ben Johnson, an administrator and presidential aide who talks about attending Riley High School and living in South Bend in the '50s and '60s, as well as those from activist Glenda Rae Hernandez, who speaks about discrimination in housing and other topics.
- Local History
You'll find a wide variety of printed materials that have been digitized for the Local History Collection, including books and pamphlets. They showcase the area's history and culture through its individuals, businesses, schools, and more. Items in the Local History Collection include a cookbook from 1907, which has recipes as well as information about the Malleable Range Company, which made ranges in South Bend. You'll also be able to access items such as a 1910 booklet chronicling the history, along with photos, of the Riverview and Bowman cemeteries, and souvenir programs from events such as the bicentennial.
- Historic Newspapers
Smaller local newspapers are available in the library's digital collection, and they offer a glimpse into the lives of local residents during specific time periods. You can search each issue by keywords and look at complete page images and download or print their full transcripts. Newspapers include The South Bend Herald (1879-1880); The South Bend Mirror (1942-1945); Clay Township News (1947-1950); and The Reformer (1967-1970), a newspaper produced by the South Bend African-American community
- Postcards
View vintage photographic and colorized postcards that show some of the area's parks, streets, and buildings throughout various years. Many depict the University of Notre Dame, including a view across the lake and aerial views of the campus and stadium. Other important landmarks represented by the postcards include Bendix Airport, the Auditorium, Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Co., and St. Mary's Lake. By clicking on each image you're interested in, you can see the postcard's original date as well as its publisher.
- Education
You'll find photographs, school bulletins, newsletters, and more from area schools in the Education Collection. It's currently being expanded, so it's worth taking another look back once in a while to check for new additions. Current items include a Booth Tarkington School dedication program from 1961, photos from the Colfax School's third- and sixth-grade classes in 1934, and a flier for Central Senior High School's 1935-era productions of "Comedies and Tragedies of Wm. Shakespeare".
