You've probably heard that location is the most important thing when looking for a new home, but even more importantly, look for an area that holds their community, their local identity, and their history very near and dear to their hearts. For example, our real estate agents love to show South Bend homes for sale because of how much local pride these areas have. To get a taste of what Elkhart and South Bend have to offer, check out these local museums you can visit right now.

  • Studebaker National Museum: Located at 201 Chapin Street in South Bend, the Studebaker National Museum is a trip through one of South Bend's proudest histories. When Studebaker closed its last plant in 1966, it gifted 33 cars to the town of South Bend, where Studebaker had operated since the company's start in the 1850s. These 33 cars are now known as the museum's original collection. In addition, the museum offers rotating temporary exhibits celebrating different aspects of Studebaker history, as well as interactive exhibits, one designed specifically for kids.

  • South Bend Museum of Art: For more than 60 years, South Bend's art museum has collected and highlighted the work of local and regional artists. The museum features five galleries that showcase their permanent collection, as well as rotating special exhibits, events, and art classes for both children and adults. The South Bend Museum of Art is located at 120 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, in the northern wing of South Bend's Century Center.

  • The History Museum: For anyone with a love of history, The History Museum has plenty to offer. Permanent exhibits cover topics such as treasures from the Oliver Mansion, the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, local history, and a miniature lamp collection, plus the museum offers rotating exhibits of interest to local history nerds. The History Museum is located at 808 West Washington Street in South Bend, with the entrance one block north on Thomas Street.

  • Midwest Museum of American Art: Located at 429 South Main Street, not far from Elkhart homes for sale, Elkhart's art museum has been collecting the works of artists from Indiana and the Midwest for over four decades. Permanent collections include local and regional works from the Hoosier School and the Chicago Imagists, as well as more distant but thoroughly American art such as that of the Ashcan School. You'll also have the chance to view the work of Norman Rockwell, American Impressionism, Expressionism, and the American West. There are rotating special exhibits to keep the museum fresh as well.

Part of the draw of this area isn't just finding a great house. It's also about finding a great community, a place with a sense of identity and rich local culture. If you're ready to be a part of a community like South Bend or Elkhart, contact us today, so we can help you find your dream home.
