Backyard BBQs: How to Host the Perfect Summer Cookout | Cressy & Everett

When summer comes, few things are more satisfying than hosting backyard cookouts for your friends and family. Everyone gets to gather around the grill, catch up, and enjoy a delicious meal together. If you've recently moved into a new home, you might be particularly excited to host a barbecue in your backyard. Our real estate agents are glad to share a few tips to make the occasion memorable.

  • Send Invitations Early
Summer gets busy! Don't wait until the last minute to invite family and friends to your barbecue. Whether you send physical invitations or just reach out via text, give everyone at least a few weeks' notice. Include an RSVP date, too. This way, you'll have a good idea of who plans on attending, so you can prepare the right amount of food and set up ample seating.

  • Make It a Pot-Luck
Ask each guest to bring a dish instead of cooking and preparing the entire meal. You can offer to provide the main course, such as the burgers and hot dogs. Assign other people the salads, side dishes, and desserts. Or, just let everyone bring whatever they want, and let yourself be surprised!

The pot-luck approach also makes it easier to ensure those with allergies and food restrictions have something to eat. Plus, it makes hosting a barbecue more affordable.

  • Plan an Activity
You don't have to have a strict schedule for the event. After all, barbecues are mostly about relaxing. But it is nice to plan at least one activity so guests have something to discuss and focus on.

For a younger crowd, a water balloon war can be fun, but ensure everyone knows not to throw water balloons at those who opt out. If you have space, you could set up a game of volleyball, bocce ball, or even croquette.

  • Stock Up on Condiments
You can never have too much ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, or relish. Stock up on these condiments before the party. You may also want to throw in some more interesting condiments, such as a locally made barbecue sauce or a friend's homemade mustard. Taste-testing these items makes for some barbecue fun.

  • Make a Playlist
The right music can set the mood at a summer barbecue. Make a playlist with all of your summer favorites. If there will be kids in attendance, make sure you only include songs that are appropriate.

If you want to go above and beyond, you can ask your friends to each contribute a song or two to the playlist. This way, everyone will get a chance to hear their favorite at the party.

  • Plan for the Weather
Hopefully, the day of your BBQ will be clear and warm. But you can't control the weather, so it is best to have some contingency plans unless it rains or is colder than expected. Consider renting a tent. This way, people can seek shelter from any rain. Even if it does not rain, a tent can offer some protection from the sun.

Make sure you clean your house in case guests need to come inside. Finally, ensure all your food containers have covers to keep things dry.

If you follow these tips, your barbecue party should be the talk of the town! If you're still looking for South Bend homes for sale, feel free to contact us. We can help you find a place with the perfect backyard for big summer barbecues.
